  • World Radiography Day

Yesterday was World Radiography Day, which marks the anniversary of the discovery of X-rays in 1895. It’s a great chance to celebrate the crucial role medical radiation practitioners play in the diagnosis and treatment of patients.

We’d like to thank each of the almost 200 members of the Medical Imaging Department at Western Health Medical Imaging, for the life changing work each of them do for patients, each and every day.

To mark the occasion we asked one of our 161 radiographers, Cindy Do, to answer some questions about her profession, ranging from the most interesting procedure to the trickiest part of the body to X-ray.

Cindy also shares with us why she loves being a radiographer:

    “Every shift is different.

“One day I might be working in the theatre helping with procedures and surgeries, the next I could be in the Emergency Department (ED), or in an orthopaedic clinic.

“We always put the patient first and there is a big focus on reflection. It’s amazing to think that at the end of a single day, we have helped hundreds of people!”

Medical imaging is made up of many imaging modalities, including those that do not use X-ray, such as Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and ultrasound.

A range of imaging and treatment modalities exist that use radiation including:

    • General X-ray
    • Ultrasound
    • Computed Tomography (CT)
    • Fluoroscopy
    • Angiography
    • Nuclear Medicine
    • Radiation Therapy

The expertise of the medical radiation practitioner is crucial to the safe and effective delivery of the imaging and treatment to all patients.

  • Transgender Awareness Week

Next week is Transgender Awareness Week, 13 to 19 November, an annual week to raise the visibility of trans and gender diverse people and address issues these members of the community face.

During Transgender Awareness Week, Western Health is focused on raising awareness and educating our staff and the broader community on who transgender people are, share stories and experiences, and advance advocacy around the issues of prejudice, discrimination and violence, that affect the transgender community, particularly in a healthcare setting.

To support this, the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion team is this week introducing education sessions on understanding sex, gender and gender diversity, pronouns and inclusive language. To participate in these sessions fill in the Western Health In-service Request Form

Visit the Westerly for more details on how you can get involved, show your support and ensure Western Health is a safe, inclusive space for trans and gender diverse people to access quality healthcare without stigma, judgement or discrimination.

  • Reflection and Recovery Week

Next Monday, marks the beginning of what has been known as Positive Workplace Week. This year Positive Workplace Week is going to be a little different.

From 13 to 17 November, Reflection and Recovery Week will run. In recognition of the ongoing busyness Western Health has, and continues, to experience, the executive and senior management team want to take some time to engage with everyone and talk about how they’re feeling.

During this week, staff will see leaders from the organisation around the place, visiting teams and checking in.

They are seeking genuine conversations, feedback and experiences, and importantly, they want to know what they can do to make things easier. All staff, when they see them around, are encouraged to stop and have a chat. Let them know how you are, and what you need.

In addition to this, there will be feedback cards and boxes located at all Western Health sites. During this week, take the time to write down your thoughts.

In addition to collecting feedback, our favourite furry friends will also be providing puppy hugs and seated massages will be available on the following days:

    • Monday 13 November: Williamstown
    • Wednesday 15 November: Bacchus Marsh/Melton
    • Friday 17 November: Sunshine Friday
    • Tuesday 21 November: Footscray

The annual Inspire Awards will also be held during Reflection and Recovery Week on Wednesday 15 November from 3pm to 4pm. These will be livestreamed for everyone to tune in to!
