A new Pharmacy Outpatient Services window at Sunshine Hospital has opened today, marking the completion of the refurbishment and expansion which is set to revolutionise pharmacy operations.

With services operating from the Joan Kirner Pharmacy since works began in September 2022, the outpatient window now returns to its refurbished location at Sunshine Hospital from Monday 4 December. Women’s and Children’s pharmacy services will continue to operate as normal from the JK Pharmacy.

Within the refurbished pharmacy department, a pair of high-tech recruits, affectionately known as Nemo and Dory, are making waves.

The automated dispensing robots are transforming the way medications are stored and supplied within the pharmacy. Nemo and Dory have undertaken intensive training to prepare for their first official day on the job today alongside the pharmacy team. It’s been a huge team effort to get to this point of the project, with thousands of medications loaded into the robotic duo to begin their job of sorting, storing and supplying medication.

The pharmacy footprint has increased from 350m² to 800m² to support the installation of the robots, allowing for growth and future capability to introduce onsite medication manufacturing in an Aseptic Suite.

Volunteer guides are continuing to assist outpatients navigate their way to the pharmacies, particularly during this transition period. A flyer is available with a map to assist outpatients and families.

Thank you to everyone across our service for your part in delivering this important development that will enable the delivery of Best Care to our growing region.
