The Research Office is proud to present Western Health’s annual Research Week, running from 16-20 October 2023. The event showcases excellence in research and innovation across disciplines at Western Health as we build on our reputation as a centre of expertise for translational and health service research, inspired by our local population and delivering a global impact.

The opening event on Monday 16 October features a keynote address by Professor Euan Wallace AM, Secretary of the Department of Health and academic obstetrician and gynaecologist by training. Sessions include: Australian Institute for Musculoskeletal Science, intern education, allied health and community services, neuroscience, subacute and aged care, general and internal medicine, oncology, women’s and children’s health, nursing and midwifery, critical care and surgical. Speakers include Western Health clinician-researchers as well as esteemed peers from medical research institutes, universities and fellow health services.

This year, the closing event will be presented by the Western Health Foundation and will feature a generous donation from private philanthropists to support the Arlene Wake Chronic Diseases Fellowships valued up to $150,000 each, a $20,000 research grant sponsored by our corporate partner BankVic and a $10,000 innovation grant sponsored by Plenary Health.

The prestigious Arlene Wake Chronic Disease Fellowships provide support to early career clinician-researchers by supplementing their income for a maximum of three years while undertaking research toward a higher degree qualification. Previous recipients Dr Rinky Girl and Dr Neville Tan will deliver short presentations on how the fellowships have helped progress their respective research projects.

The $20,000 BankVic research grant can be used to develop a feasibility study or support completion of existing Western Health research initiatives supporting new models of care, health service delivery, innovation or quality improvement. Both new and currently underway projects are eligible to apply. The $10,000 Plenary Health innovation grant can be used to develop a feasibility study, support completion of existing Western Health led research or to further develop these activities towards the next phase of development. Both new and currently underway projects are eligible to apply. Applications for the BankVic and Plenary Health grants close 8 October.
